Community
Nature Reserves are based upon the idea that we can create a mosaic of
wildlife-friendly places where we live and garden. The baseline measurement for
success is a single football pitch.
Whether it be a garden, allotment, pond, window box, or bug hotel, all
of these areas can be visited by insects, bats and birds (and with appropriate
adaptions, small mammals like hedgehogs too).
As Calne becomes ever more developed with housing and industry, these
gaps between the buildings become so much more important.
The reality is that many of us will already have wildlife-friendly
areas, for others gardening for wildlife will be an exciting new project that
we can also get our kids involved with.
Based on three square metres (for example, a strip of 1m by 3m), we
would need 2,133 people involved to create a community nature reserve of 6,400
square metres. This is equal to a single adult-size football pitch.
